The Sun Globe on display in the Astronomy Exhibition shows the surface of the Sun as viewed by the naked eye from space. The globe is 3.5 meters in diameter. It is made of highly durable and lightweight carbon fiber material, which allows a suspension of the globe from the ceiling, creating the illusion of a floating sphere. Eight professional projectors were installed, including an auto-calibration system. Four of them were mounted on the ceiling through an aluminium truss, four were set into the floor.
The projection technique used is characterized by its high color brilliance and durability. The overall resolution is about 32 megapixels.
The swirling granular structure of the Sun’s surface and its periodically occurring solar spots have been projected onto the globe, using the images taken by the SDO satellite as a reference.
