The umbrellas on Madinah Piazza are impressive architectural elements that offer both functionality and aesthetics. They play a crucial role for pilgrims, providing shade and cooling while enhancing the charm of the square. A total of 250 convertible umbrellas were developed based on the design for the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque. Equipped with an innovative folding arm mechanism consisting of six joints, these umbrellas allow for a wide range of motion and flexibility. This advanced system enables easy opening and closing, adapting to varying lighting conditions throughout the day. Umbrellas of 26 by 26 meters offer two different heights and allow for the formation of a cohesive roof through the overlap of their membranes.
The membranes are crafted from Teflon-coated fabric, which is weather-resistant, UV-protective, dirt-repellent, and abrasion-resistant. In the closed position, fiberglass-reinforced composite coverings shield the membranes from wind and sand, promoting longevity.
The arrangement of the umbrellas creates a harmonious connection with the surrounding architecture of Madinah Piazza, enhanced by valuable weatherproof glass mosaic decorations. The movable shade roof creates a protected space of the highest architectural quality, accommodating up to 250,000 pilgrims.
